Redesigns that keep what ranks
HVAC Website Redesign That Carries Your Rankings Forward
A redesign is one of the riskiest website projects an HVAC company takes on. Years of search visibility sit on your current URLs, backlinks and page content, and a careless relaunch can push service and city pages down right before peak season. HVAC by Pixcel treats a redesign as a migration first and a design project second, so you get a modern site without starting over in search.
Quick answer
How do you redesign an HVAC website without losing Google rankings?
You protect rankings in an HVAC website redesign by treating it as a migration first and a design project second, the approach HVAC by Pixcel takes on every redesign. Each page that earns traffic, calls or links gets a permanent redirect to its new URL and keeps its useful content. Some short-term movement is normal, but lasting losses usually come from missing redirects, deleted pages or thinner content.

Rankings carried across
Every page that earns traffic, calls or links today is mapped to a destination on the new site, with permanent redirects and its useful content preserved. Search engines see a clear, orderly move, not a site that vanished overnight.
A clear before and after
We record traffic, rankings, calls and form leads before launch, then compare the same measures afterward. You can see what changed, page by page, instead of judging the project on how the new site feels.
A modern site, same foundations
Your team gets a faster, mobile-first site with better call paths, while the parts that already work, such as strong service pages, review content and local signals, are kept and improved rather than thrown away.

Full URL inventory
A crawl of your current site combined with Search Console, analytics and backlink data, so we know every URL that ranks, gets traffic or has external links.
Redirect map
A one-to-one map from each old URL to the closest new page, set up as permanent 301 redirects, with no blanket redirects to the homepage.
Content carry-over
Copy that ranks is kept, edited and expanded rather than rewritten from scratch. Title tags, headings and internal links are reviewed before anything changes.
Staging and pre-launch checks
The new site is built on a private staging address blocked from indexing, then checked for broken links, missing pages, schema, forms and tracking before launch.
Launch monitoring
We switch over during a quieter window, submit the new sitemap, test redirects on the live domain and watch Search Console for crawl errors in the weeks after.
Before and after reporting
Baseline and post-launch reports covering organic traffic, rankings for core terms, calls by source and form submissions, compared across matching seasonal periods.
Why HVAC redesigns lose rankings
When a relaunch goes wrong, the cause is rarely the new design itself. It is usually one of a few avoidable mistakes:
- Changed URLs with no redirects. A page that ranked for AC repair in your main city moves to a new address, and the old one starts returning a “page not found” error.
- Thin replacement content. A detailed furnace repair page is replaced with three lines and an image because it looked cleaner in the mockup.
- Lost city pages. Service area pages are cut to simplify the menu, and the rankings they held go with them.
- Staging settings left on. The new site launches while still telling search engines not to index it.
- Changed business details. A new phone number or address format no longer matches your Google Business Profile and citations.
None of these are design problems. They are migration problems, and a plan prevents them. Before we scope a redesign, we run the checks in our HVAC SEO checklist against your current site, so we know exactly what has to be protected.
How we plan the migration
Inventory
We crawl your current site and pull every URL with traffic, impressions, calls or backlinks from Search Console, analytics and link data. The list often includes old blog posts and coupon pages nobody remembers building, some of which still bring in visits.
Mapping
Each URL gets a decision: keep the same address, move it with a 301 redirect, merge it into a stronger page, or retire it with a redirect to the closest match. Nothing important is left to a catch-all redirect to the homepage.
Content
Pages that rank keep their substance. We restructure them for the new design, improve headings and calls to action, and add content where a page was thin, rather than replacing proven copy with slogans.
Launch
We launch outside your peak weeks where possible. The spring and fall shoulder seasons are usually safer than the first heat wave or cold snap. On launch day we test redirects, submit the sitemap in Search Console and confirm that tracking, forms and booking work on the live domain.
Measuring before and after
A redesign should be judged on data, not opinion. Before we change anything, we record a baseline:
- Organic clicks and impressions by page from Search Console
- Positions for your core service and city terms
- Calls by source from your call tracking
- Form submissions and online bookings
- Core Web Vitals and mobile speed on key templates
HVAC demand is seasonal, so comparing August with October tells you very little. We compare matching periods, usually year over year, and note anything else that changed at the same time, such as new ad spend or a Google Business Profile update. Some ranking movement in the weeks after a migration is normal while search engines recrawl the site, and we watch closely through that period. If a page drops and stays down, we check its redirect, content and internal links first.

Will we lose our Google rankings if we redesign?
Some short-term movement is common after any migration while search engines recrawl the site. Lasting losses usually come from missing redirects, deleted pages or thinner content, and those are what our migration plan is designed to prevent. We cannot promise rankings, because no one controls Google, but we make sure the signals your current site has earned are carried across properly.
Can we change our domain name during the redesign?
You can, but it adds risk, so we usually recommend separating the two changes unless there is a strong reason. If the domain must change, we redirect every old URL to its new equivalent, use the Change of Address tool in Google Search Console, update your Google Business Profile and citations, and keep the old domain registered with its redirects in place.
When is the best time to launch an HVAC redesign?
Ideally in a shoulder season, when call volume is lower and your team has time to review pages. Launching during the first heat wave puts any problem in front of the most customers and gives your office the least time to report it. We plan the schedule backward from your preferred launch window, with a typical build of 4–6 weeks.
Do you rewrite all of our existing content?
No. Pages that rank and bring in calls keep their core content, edited for clarity and structure. We rewrite pages that are thin, outdated or inaccurate, and we add pages where your service mix or service area has grown. Any change to a page that currently ranks is deliberate and recorded, so we can trace its effect later.
What if our current site is on a platform you don't build on?
That is common. We migrate content from most platforms, including site builders bundled with marketing vendors. What matters is getting a full export or crawl of the old site, admin access to the domain and DNS, and access to Search Console and analytics. If an old vendor controls your domain, we help you request the transfer before work begins.
